Police in Ho Chi Minh City have arrested a young man who splashed acid solution at a girl he loves in an attempt to stop her wedding, injuring five other people.

Nguyen Van Dung, 30, was caught by local people and security forces as he fled on Nguyen Van Cu Street

Eyewitnesses said Dung had waited on his motorbike in front of a house on the street and threw a mug of the solution at his intended victim Hong Kim Hui, 23, as she came out of the door with her sister and cousin.

Hui managed to run away but the acid severely injured and took down the other girls.

He chased after Hui into a neighbor's yard and only fled when the acid took down Hui, a 45-year-old neighbor and two girls of 11 years old.

All the victims were rushed to hospital with the adults suffering severe burns.

Investigations found that Dung's family from the Mekong Delta's Ben Tre Province knew Hui's from the nearby Kien Giang Province through some business cooperation, and that he developed affections for her two years ago, but it had been only a one-way street.

Recently he learnt that the woman was visiting a relative on Nguyen Van Cu Street, from where they would take a taxi to the airport to fly home for Hui's wedding. So he ambushed Hui at the relative's home.

Doctors at Cho Ray Hospital, which is treating the victims, said they have received 12 victims of acid attacks this year and most of the cases involved love and revenge.
