The Bac Ninh police are set to file murder charges against a 28-year-old woman for allegedly suffocating her 70-year-old employer who attempted to rape her.
They said Vu Thi Van of Hung Yen was working as a housekeeper for a man identified only as Pham in the northern province's Tu Son town for the last two years.
Just before the murder, his son gave Pham VND2 million, but instead of keeping it himself, he asked her to keep it for him. Van did not keep it but returned the money to Pham's son.
On July 2, Pham asked for the money when Van was working in a room on the fourth floor. Pham insisted that she return the money, failing which she had to have sex with him.
He then locked the room and attempted to rape her. While trying to defend herself, Van used a bed sheet to smother his face.
After around five minutes she saw that Pham was not moving, and pulled off the sheet to find him unconscious.
She sprinkled water on his face to revive him, but to no avail. She then went to a nearby police station and turned herself in.
Van was married but her husband died of an illness in 2009. Her parents are bringing up her two children, aged four and six, enabling her to work.
