Authorities in the southern province of Long An Friday fired the chief of the provincial market management agency for illegally interfering with the agency's staff employment and dismissal process, VnExpress reported.

Nguyen Van Minh, who would still hold his position as the vice director of Long An's Department of Industry and Trade, was also found failing to discharge his duties properly, according to the news website. Specific details of Minh's alleged demeanours were not available immediately.

Minh's dismissal was announced while the provincial party unit was considering punishments against two of his subordinates, Nguyen Van Tam and Nguyen Van Sang, for gambling in Cambodia.

Tam and Sang's forays into Cambodia were discovered during investigations into the high-profile murder of Le Hoang Hung, reporter for the Nguoi Lao Dong (Laborer) newspaper.

Tam has been accused of having an affair with Hung's wife, Tran Thuy Lieu, and joining hands with her in setting the latter on fire when he was sleeping on January 19. The reporter succumbed ten days later to severe burns.

Lieu turned herself in to the local police after denying accusations of any role in the murder for nearly one month.

Tam has been suspended until police complete their investigations into the case.
