Lightning kills 6, injures 5 in northern Vietnam

Six people were killed and five others injured in two separate lighting accidents the northern province of Lang Son on Sunday, Vietnam News Agency reported.

According to local authorities, heavy rains combined with thunder and lightning occurred at around 4 p.m. on Sunday, killing and injuring the 11 farmers in two rural villages.

In the first accident, eight people of Hop Duong Village, Lien Son Commune, were sheltering in a tent on a hill when lighting struck and killed Vi Van Luat, 36, Luong Van Y, 24, Vi Van Hung, 15, and Luong Van Hien, 13, on the spot.

Vi Thi Pen, 50, Vi Duc Quan, 49, Luong Van Cam, 32, and Luong Van Tu, 12, were injured. They are being treated at a local hospital.

Around the same time, three buffalo grazers in Hop Tan Village, Gia Cat Commune, were struck by lightning.

Two of them 72-year-old Chu Thi Liem and 15-year-old Nong Van Binh were killed while Nong Thi Bao, a 76-year-old woman, was seriously injured.
