Leaking drainage pipe caused sinkhole in HCMC street

Earth corrosion caused by a leak in a buried drainage pipe left a large sinkhole in a street along Nhieu Loc Canal in Ho Chi Minh City last month, authorities said Wednesday.
Chinese contractor TMEC-CHEC 3, which installed the drainage pipe, would be responsible for repairs, which would begin next week and take two months, according the management of the drainage system in the area.
The massive crater, which covers an area of about 40 square meters and is about 3 meters deep, opened up on Truong Sa St. on Aug. 4.
Vuong Hai Long, the chief management official, said the leak was detected after a robotic camera crawler was sent into the pipe.
Part of the street has been closed to traffic since the incident occurred.
