The Ministry of Public Security's investigators on Monday took into custody a lawyer on suspicions that he had swindled "a huge amount of properties" from a pharmaceutical giant which was being subjected to a smuggling investigation.
Duong Kim Son, 40, director of Hanoi-based Minh Son Law Firm, is now being probed on charges of "fraud", but details about his alleged offense were not revealed.
His supposed victim, VN Pharma in Ho Chi Minh City, was rocked by accusations that its executives colluded with an outsider to smuggled more than US$750,000 worth of cancer medicine last April.
The case was busted in September the same year when police arrested chairman and CEO Nguyen Minh Hung along with Vo Manh Cuong, a representative of a foreign drug company in Vietnam.
Police said Hung forged papers for the imports and distribute the drugs in the local market with the assistance of his two deputy director generals, chief accountant and trade deputy manager.
All the four accomplices were too placed under investigation with three taken into custody.
VN Pharma, which has branches in Hanoi and the Mekong Delta provinces of An Giang and Ca Mau, won many large public contracts to supply medicine to hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City prior to the scandal.
