Police and forest rangers in the central province of Nghe An have confiscated two bear cubs and 174 tortoises from a car with Laos-registered plate number, Vietnamnet reported on Thursday.
Some 60 kilograms of bear paws were also found on the car driven by 41-year-old Pham Van Hung, who lives in the province's Dien Chau District, police told the newswire.
Hung's car was stopped by authorities in Vinh Town on its way from the adjacent Ha Tinh province on Wednesday.
Investigators said that Nguyen Van Tien, also from Dien Chau District, bought the animals from wildlife traders in Laos and then hired Hung to transport them to Vietnam, the news source reported.
Nghe An Forest Rangers have taken the animals, while police and related agencies have launched investigations into the case.
