Three people were killed during a landslide in the northern province of Lao Cai Monday, according to a local official.

Nguyen Ngoc Quang, deputy chief of Van Ban District's police division, said the incident took place at around 1 p.m. and buried a house with three people inside.

The victims were all the workers of Hoang Lan Company, he said, adding that it was not raining at the time.

It was estimated that the house of Nguyen Van Tam was covered by nearly 1,000 cubic meters of earth, Ma Van Hung, head of Son Thuy Commune's police division, told Tuoi Tre.

Initial information showed that two days before, Tam and some workers from Viet-Trung Metallurgy and Mineral Company dug around the house to expand its foundation, creating a pile of soil 15 meters high, Tuoi Tre reported.

Local agencies suspected that recent rains caused the accident, which is now under investigation.
