A man who is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, beheading and robbing her has been placed under investigation, Hanoi police said Friday.
Nguyen Duc Nghia, 26, was arrested on Tuesday, one day after the body of 24-year-old Ngo Phuong Linh was found naked and without her head and fingers on the rooftop of the building G4 in Cau Giay District.
The body was disintegrating when it was discovered.
Nghia, who was nabbed while hiding in the northern province of Thai Nguyen, told police he and Linh broke up around year ago and he had a new girlfriend, but they still continued to date.
On May 4 Nghia asked Linh to meet him at the apartment of his new girlfriend, Hoang Thi Yen, who gave him the keys to watch over it while she was visiting her hometown. The apartment was located on the 11th floor of the same building.
Linh then received a call from someone who she said was her new boyfriend, making him jealous and provoking him to kill her, Nghia said.
He cut off Linh's head and fingers before wrapping her body with a blanket and putting it on the rooftop, Nghia told the police, adding that he got rid of the body parts in the northern province of Quang Ninh.
After killing Linh, Nghia pawned her motorbike in exchange for another bike he'd pawned before. He also pawned her laptop and mobile phone for a total of VND5 million (US$262.92).
Police said Yen, 24, has also been placed under investigation for not informing police of Nghia's acts after he had told her about the murder on the same day that the body was found.
