A judge was arrested in the southern province of Dong Nai Monday for
allegedly taking bribes from a businesswoman for favoring her in a lawsuit against the local administration that came up before him.
Nguyen Minh Toan of the Vinh Cuu District People's Court is in custody for three months for investigation of charges of "power abuse," the Supreme People's Procuracy, the prosecutor's office, said.
Toan has been accused of taking a camera worth VND20 million (US$950) from Nguyen Hoai Anh in June.
He allegedly demanded that Anh, director of Nguyen Hoai Anh Company, give him the camera in return for favoring her in her lawsuit against Vinh An town over a project her company was working on.
Her suit was dismissed in July, prosecutors said without elaborating.
After that she complained about Toan's bribery to several agencies including the procuracy.
The judge had also demanded a mobile phone but Anh had refused, the prosecutors said.
