A journalist based in the central province of Nghe An was assaulted at a filling station on Monday morning.
Vo Thanh Mai stopped his motorbike at the filling station on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street when an unidentified assailant ran out of the distance and attempted to plunge a scimitar into his shoulder.
When Mai attempted to dodge the thrust, the blade slipped, opening a wound on his elbow and wrist.
After he cried out, his assailant jumped on the back of a waiting motorbike and escaped.
Mai was later taken to hospital and received 21 stitches in his three wounds.
Mai said he recently published several stories in Nong Nghiep Viet Nam (Vietnam Agriculture) newspaper about illegal logging in the mountainous Anh Son District.
His stories charged several officials in Thanh Chuong District with land management misconduct, he said.
The Nong Nghiep Viet Nam newspaper has asked provincial police to investigate the case.
