The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will send technical experts and equipment to water utilities in central Vietnam under a US$3 million project agreed to recently.

Under the three-year project, JICA will also hold training courses in Japan for Vietnamese officials.

The project, to be carried out from June 2010, aims to help the water utilities to improve human resource management, upgrade the supply system and improve the quality of the sector's staff.

Vietnam now has more than 440 water supply utilities, which have a total designed capacity of 5.9 million cubic meters per day, but they only manage 70 percent of this, according to the Ministry of Construction.
