A woman in the central province Quang Ngai has been publicly rebuked for slitting the face of a neighbor's child several times after being angered by jokes that the boy looked like her husband.

Authorities warned Le Thi Thanh Dung, 30, that she would face criminal charges if she attacked 21-month-old Vo Van Tien again.

Dung of Nghia An Commune, Tu Nghia District, took a pair of scissors to Tien's face on four different occasions in the last few weeks.

His parents, who live next door, said they informed the police on October 4 after the boy woke up at home with a deep slit on his face that bled profusely.

On earlier occasions they had thought the scratches on his face were caused by falls.

Online newspaper Xa Luan said the boy told his mother that it was Dung's handiwork.

The police said Dung suspected the boy's mother had an affair with her husband.

At the public rebuke in front of commune authorities and local residents, she apologized to the family and promised to pay for cosmetic surgery for Tien.

The boy's parents did not want to press charges, the police said.
