A court in the southeastern province of Dong Nai sentenced a Vietnamese woman to 12 years in jail Monday for spending money embezzled by her Japanese lover.

Duong Thi Thanh Nhan, 31, was found guilty of spending more than VND18 billion (US$854,000) misappropriated by Nishimura Setsuo, 58, from Japanese-owned company Sanyo Di Solutions Vietnam, located at the Bien Hoa 2 Industrial Zone in Dong Nai.

Nhan was found guilty of "spending the proceeds of crime" after Setsuo was sentenced to life for embezzlement.

According to the indictment, Nhan worked for a karaoke parlor in Ho Chi Minh City's District 1, where she got to know Satsuo, the financial and personnel director of Sanyo Di Solutions Vietnam, in 2005.

Although he was married (his wife and children were in Japan), Satsuo began dating Nhan.

Nhan told him that she needed money to start her own hotel and restaurant business, motivating the Japanese man to misappropriate a total of VND132.5 billion ($6.28 million) and over $530,000 from the company between July 2008 and April 2009.

Satsuo told police he could not remember the exact amount and the occasions he gave money to Nhan as there were no receipts.

He said Nhan spent the money on luxury goods and overseas trips, and she also gambled a lot, during her various trips to casinos in Macau.

However, the woman said she received only VND30 billion from him for shopping and gambling, and that she had returned nearly half of the money to him.

Japanese man receives life sentence for embezzlement in Vietnam

According to Dong Nai police investigators, Nhan and two coworkers once went to a bank to receive VND19 billion transferred from Satsuo's bank account.

On a second occasion, Nhan asked the two coworkers to receive VND11.4 billion transferred by her lover as she was gambling in Macau.

Police said she received a total VND30.4 billion on the two occasions, but she then gave Satsuo back around VND12 billion.

Police said Nhan spent all the remaining VND18 billion on jewelry and gambling.

Satsuo fled the country in April 2009 after his acts were detected by his company. Nhan also fled the country around that time.

In September 2009, Nhan returned to Vietnam and was arrested at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in HCMC.

On December 17, 2009, Setsuo was also arrested at the same airport after flying back to Vietnam.

On December 18, 2012, the Dong Nai Province People's Court sentenced Setsuo to 20 years in jail for embezzlement.

On April 24 this year, at an appeal trial, the Supreme People's Court in HCMC increased his jail term to life as the judges said he failed to repay the money he stole, and because the previous sentence had not been harsh enough.

The Dong Nai court tried Nhan in a separate trial.
