A Vietnamese man who injured himself aboard a Panamanian cargo boat has been saved and hospitalized in Japan after a helicopter rescue on Friday.
The Australia-bound Coral Diamond was around 400 kilometers from Iwo Jima Island when crew member Tran Van Thuy, 32, had an eight-meter fall and was then unable to move.
Japanese coastal patrols received a distress call from the Coral Diamond at 11 a.m. and sent a helicopter to get Thuy the same day.
Three doctors and two rescue workers were sent to provide initial treatment before transferring him to the emergency unit at the Tokyo Fire Police Department at 7:10 p.m.
Thuy has recovered and is now back on board his boat.
He is one of 19 Vietnamese crew members on the boat, which has two other South Koreans aboard.
