Police the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang are interrogating eight people for their involvement in the smuggling of 92 kilograms of gold confiscated early this month.
Nguyen Ngoc Luan, Nguyen Thi Tuyet Van, Tieu Khai Phen, Pham Tung Nguyen, Hong Duc Sanh, Le Van Don, Nguyen Van Loi, and Tran Phi Toan have all been arrested and are currently under questioning.
According to police reports, Luan and Van bought the gold bars in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh and hired Sanh, Don, Loi, and Toan to transport them from Tien Giang to Phen and Nguyen in Ho Chi Minh City.
The gold had its labels and symbols removed before being transported, investigators said.
An initial investigation showed the gang had smuggled gold several times before being detected on February 2 when Toan, Sanh, Don and Loi were caught transporting the 92 kilograms of bars from Tien Giang to HCMC in an SUV.
