Police in the central Vietnamese province of Nghe An have busted a gang trading drugs in prison and are investigating 24 inmates.

Officers at Detention Camp 3 in Tan Ky District found drugs in the possession of Le Xuan Minh, and while investigating the case, seized 6.55 grams of heroin from Nguyen Manh Cuong, another prisoner.

They then expanded their investigation to include 22 others.

They discovered that Minh, the gang leader, asked his family to open two bank accounts so that any prisoner wanting to buy drugs could transfer money into them through their own families. The drugs would be handed over once Minh's family received the money.

The police said Minh had been doing this for a long time, and had more than VND3.6 billion (US$171,000) in the bank accounts.

They have not found out yet how Minh acquired the drugs.
