Police in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong said Monday they have recommended charges against a prison inmate for holding a pregnant guard hostage last month to demand his release, Phap Luat newspaper reported.
Nguyen Gia Trung, an inmate at the Dai Binh Prison in Bao Lam District, faces charges of "illegally capturing people," "intentionally damaging property," and "intentionally injuring people" after he held an unnamed officer at knifepoint and asked to be taken home in a car to visit his family.
He promised to return to the prison and serve out his time.
Trung was sentenced to seven years for robbery, and has so far served four and a half years.
He had fashioned the knife himself.
Despite four hours of negotiations, prison officials were unable to persuade him to release the woman who was seven months pregnant.
They had to break down the door of the room where he held her and use tear gas to nab him.
They said he had kicked her in the stomach and caused injuries.
