Indonesia this week released 13 more Vietnamese fishermen it had jailed recently for illegally fishing in its waters.
Vietnam News Agency said 10 of them flew home Thursday, a day after the other three.
The release was the first this year and at least 30 more are set to come home before the Lunar New Year, Vietnam’s biggest holiday, on February 8.
Vietnam’s ambassador to Indonesia, Hoang Anh Tuan, said the incarceration period depends on a fisherman’s position in his boat.
But the embassy has been making a lot of effort to release jailed Vietnamese fishermen, he said.
Indonesia last year arrested 659 Vietnamese for trespass, most of them from the provinces of Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, and Binh Thuan in central Vietnam and the southern provinces of Kien Giang and Ba Ria-Vung Tau.
Indonesia released 666 last year.
