In an effort to stamp out bribery, the Ho Chi Minh City t raffic police department has ordered officers not to carry more than VND100,000 (US$4.7) in their pockets while on duty.

Anyone who needs to carry more than that amount will have to put it in a sealed envelope.

Newswire Vietnamnet, which reported this Wednesday, said the Ministry of Public Security earlier sent a letter to police chiefs in provinces and cities instructing them to sack officers who violate rules and behave rudely towards the public.

Those caught taking bribes have to be punished severely, it added.
