Authorities in downtown Ho Chi Minh City have sought permission to remove license plates from cars parked illegally on streets.

The District 1 People's Committee has made the proposal to the city administration saying officials will resort to this measure when a car is illegally parked without its driver around.

Speaking to Thanh Nien Monday, Nguyen Thanh Kien, the district chairman, said the proposal was in response to the fact that many cars, especially taxis, parked wherever they liked ignoring signs.

The district authorities have also asked for permission to charge parking fees by the hour on 10 main streets like Le Loi and Ham Nghi.
