At least one person was killed and four others injured after an explosion destroyed the headquarters of a fertilizer manufacturing company in Ho Chi Minh City on Friday afternoon. Two other people are believed to still be trapped in the debris.
Three adjacent houses also collapsed in the explosion, which occurred at around 3:50 pm in Kim Anh Trade and Services Limited Company on Le Thi Rieng Street, District 12.
The dead person was identified as Nguyen Thi Cam Tu, 19, district officials said at a press conference at 7.30pm.
They could also identify three wounded people as Doan Phung, 46, Nguyen Thi Thuy Van, 30, and Van's daughter Pham Thuy Duong, 4.
Nguyen Thi Ngoc Thanh, 30, and Huynh Thi Tam, 36, are considered missing, the officials said.
Meanwhile, a source from the District 12 Hospital told Thanh Nien they have admitted four victims of the explosion, including an elderly, a woman and two children - a boy and a girl.
The blast rocked many other houses in the neighborhood, just one kilometer away from National Highway 1A. Some of those houses were partly damaged.
Hundreds of firefighters, rescuers and militiamen were sent to the site.
A police officer told Thanh Nien there are hundreds of barrels containing chemicals inside the company’s campus.
Some local residents told Thanh NIen News the explosion started at the warehouse storing chemicals.
