A court in the central town of Hue Wednesday handed jail terms to 10 people, most of them owners of local hotels and bars, for gambling on football games.

According to the indictment by Hue town prosecutors, in August last year La Duc Lan, 35, persuaded Huynh Tang Quang, 43, to open an account on an online gambling site to bet on football games.

Quang divided it into 10 sub-accounts and gave them to seven others to organize a betting network.

When the ring was busted in October last year they had organized betting on 1,826 international games in Europe, prosecutors said.

Lan and Quang were sentenced to 10 years and nine and half years for "organizing gambling" and "gambling".

Vo Linh Nghiem, 37, got six years for the same charges.

The seven others, including Quang's father Huynh Tang Hung, 62, were sentenced to between eight months and three and half years for "gambling."

In Vietnam all forms of gambling, except on horse and greyhound races, are illegal. Vietnamese citizens are not allowed to enter casinos in the country.

But the government recently issued a draft decree, which, if approved by the National Assembly, will legalize gambling on international football.
