Ho Chi Minh City police said Monday they had handed over a suspect who is wanted in the northern province of Quang Ninh for stealing nearly $116,000 worth of personal effects from a single wealthy businessman last month.

Ngo Van Truong, 23, was arrested while trying to fence the proceeds of his crime at Parkson shopping center on Hung Vuong Street in District 5 on Saturday morning.

The man, who resides in the northern province of Thanh Hoa, told the police he broke into the offices of a Quang Ninh company on August 11 and stole the majority of the goods from the company’s deputy director while he was on vacation.

The goods included a VND1.1 billion (US $52,000) Vertu cell phone, two watches worth more than $30,000 each, a $2,000 gold ring, two belts worth $2,000, and a laptop.

Before breaking into the high-ranking manager’s office, Truong had secretly tracked his victim, studying his habits and schedule.

Truong said he sold the watches for $20,000 and squandered all the proceeds at a casino.

The rest of his haul was seized by the police after his arrest.

A Ho Chi Minh City policeman told Thanh Nien News that Truong was the culprit of many serious burglaries around the country.

He is suspected of having broken into a People’s Committee building in a southern province and making off with a number of valuables.
