Police in Ho Chi Minh City have busted a nationwide drug trafficking ring, arresting seven people and seizing nearly 19 kilograms of heroin and methamphetamine.
Do Thai Dung, believed to be the ring leader, was caught carrying 120 grams of heroin in his backpack at a restaurant in District 1 on January 9, police said.
On the same day, police arrested three of his accomplices while they were delivering illicit drugs to two separate locations in the western districts of Binh Tan and Tan Binh.
The three remaining accomplices, Dung's street dealers in the city, were caught days later at their houses.
Police seized a total of 18.5 kilos of methamphetamine, 120 grams of heroin, 99 pills of meth and VND565 million (US$25,000) during the bust.
Police had kept tabs on Dung and his nationwide operations after arresting four suspects and seized 2.5 kilos of methamphetamine in October last year. Dung came from the northern city of Hai Phong.
