Ho Chi Minh City narcotics police announced, Friday, that they've busted a large drug ring run by an 80-year-old woman.
Nguyen Thi Miet was arrested in June.
A subsequent two-month investigation revealed she that she served as a wholesale heroin distributor for a northern kingpin.
At around 7pm on June 26 police arrested Miet while buying 3.3 kilograms of heroin from Ngo Van Thanh, 51, at her house in District 10.
The old woman claimed she needed the money to raise her grandchildren.
A subsequent search of her four-story home on Cao Thang Street turned up one 330g brick of heroin hidden in a bedroom wardrobe and a second 330g brick in a kitchen cupboard.
Police also recovered US$ 92,000, which Miet said she intended to use to pay Thanh for the new delivery.
Police say Miet usually ordered a large amount of drugs from a kingpin named Dung in northern Vietnam. She then sold the drugs to wholesale dealers in HCMC.
One of her buyers was identified as Tran Thi Ngoc Thuy, a 39-year-old woman who has already served jail time for smuggling drugs.
Police said they identified a number of other co-conspirators.
Their investigation remains underway.
