One of Vietnam's most renown historians, Professor Tran Van Giau, died of natural causes at 100 years old on Thursday in Ho Chi Minh City.

Born in the Southern province of Long An, Giau became known for his award-winning works in history and philosophy.

He was also honored for his contributions to the country's fight against French and American domination and to his present-day  activities like flood relief.

In his final years, Giau raised 1,000 taels of gold [1 tael = 35.84 million (US$1,838)] for a scholarship fund by selling his home.
