The family of a newborn who went missing in a Hanoi-based hospital last week has proposed related agencies to press charges against the hospital's health workers, VnExpress reported Monday.

In his letter to the capital's police and People's Procuracy, lawyer Cao Ba Trung, representative for the family, accused doctors and other health workers who were in charge of the shift on November 3 at the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology of lacking responsibility, which caused critical consequences.

The family alleges the hospital's workers let a strange woman wearing a white blouse enter the room of Tran Thi Thom, who gave birth to Pham Xuan Truong on November 1. The boy was taken away during the hours when guest visits are restricted, Trung said.

The lawyer also proposed "prohibitive measures" for the persons involved to prevent similar cases from occurring again, and to support investigations, the newswire reported.

Thom's family will drop their proposal for criminal charges, if they can find the baby, Trung was quoted as saying, adding that "but I believe that investigative agencies will interfere in because the case has faced critical consequences."

According to VnExpress, Trung also has sent a letter to the hospital's director, asking related people to be suspended "for the purpose of investigations and lessening the public's outrage," stressing that the hospital needs to take responsibility as well.

Thom, 34, said at around 10.30 a.m. on November 3, a woman between 25 to 27 years old wearing a white blouse told the family she was taking the baby, who was born two days earlier, for some tests.

About one hour later, when the woman didn't come back, Thom's younger sister rushed to ask doctors in charge what had happened to their son, and were told that the baby would be returned soon.

After 1 p.m., when the baby still had not returned, doctors went to the testing room and found that the baby had never been there, Thom said.

VnExpress said on Monday that Hanoi's police found a baby alleged to be Truong, but later identified that he wasn't.

Police said in the newswire that the baby was found at a family in Thanh Xuan District. It was adopted by the family almost at the same time when Truong went missing, leading to their suspicions, they said.

The search for Truong is still underway, according to police.
