Video footage of a traffic violator brutally assaulting a Ho Chi Minh City traffic cop went viral last weekend, raising further questions about officer safety.
On Saturday, Lieutenant-colonel Tran Thanh Tra, deputy chief of HCMC Traffic Police, told Thanh Nien the incident had occurred on Thursday.
He also revealed that the assailant has been taken into police custody.
The 48-second clip showed a man in jean shorts and a blue shirt repeatedly striking a police officer with a metal rod, driving him from the roadside into a spare parts store on Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street.
The police officer fought back with his baton.
According to a Thanh Nien source, the officer featured in the clip is Sergeant-major Van Thanh Luan of the Hang Xanh Traffic Police unit.
The source said the fight broke out after Luan stopped his attacker for driving without a helmet.
After Luan ordered the man to produce his official papers, the violator produced a metal rod from his bike trunk and began attacking Luan.
The perpetrator fled the scene after passers-by intervened on the officer's behalf.
