The French-built sewer on Dong Khoi Street

Ho Chi Minh City authorities will demolish a deteriorating French-era sewer under the downtown street of Dong Khoi next year.
The HCM Law newspaper quoted the Department of Transport as saying the brick-built sewer between Le Thanh Ton and Ton Duc Thang streets has been operating for around 150 years and is currently in bad condition.
There are cracks, with bricks and mortar falling apart, it said.
The city recently repaired the sewer. But for the long-term safety, a project to demolish and replace the old system will start in February 2016, according to the city government.
