Police in Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday morning caught a bus smuggling more than 16,000 packs of Jet-branded cigarettes, the biggest haul so far this year, from the neighboring province of Long An to the city.
The packs were hidden under seats and in the luggage compartment, police said.
The bus driver Vo Van Phu told police that the owner had paid him VND10 million (US$467) to traffic the cigarettes from Long An Province, west of HCMC, to Dong Nai Province in the east.
Market management authorities in HCMC said they have seized more than 800,000 packs of smuggle cigarettes, mostly Jet and Hero products, this year.
Most of the contraband came from Cambodia through the border provinces Long An, Tay Ninh and An Giang.
