Ho Chi Minh City police arrested Monday a teenager who snatched a bag from a young woman last September thanks to a video that captured the event and attracted much public attention.
Diep Tan Dung, 19, of Binh Duong Province was apprehended at his house in District 9.
On September 25, Dung sat on the back seat of a motorbike driven by Le Minh Pha, 19, of HCMC and snatched a bag from a woman named Yen, 24, who was driving a motorbike on Nguyen Huu Canh Street near the Saigon Bridge.
A man was driving a car in back of the two robbers and his car's camera accidentally captured the scene.
The incident happened at around 3:25 p.m. and the robbery caused the woman to fall from her bike and collapse in the street. Her helmet flew off her head when it hit the ground and she was nearly struck by the oncoming car.
The robbers fled the scene after successfully grabbing the bag.
The man driving the car in back of the robbery then posted the clip on YouTube. It was viewed widely online, prompting local police to investigate.
Based on information about the robbers' motorbike and its license plate, police identified the robbers as Dung and Pha, who fled the city after hearing that their crime had been viewed on the internet.
The two came to Gia Lai Province to hide until they ran out of money. On Monday, Dung returned to his house in District 9 to ask for some money from his wife and was nabbed by police.
According to police, Dung is a notorious gangster in Binh Duong and already has one robbery conviction on record.
Police are still searching for Pha.
