Ho Chi Minh City police arrested two bag snatchers in the city's downtown after a lengthy cat and mouse chase on Friday, VnExpress reported.
At noon on Friday, a group of police officers in District 1 were patrolling the downtown when they spotted two “suspicious-looking” men on a motorbike and decided to follow them.
When the suspects arrived at the intersection of Nguyen Thai Hoc and Pham Ngu Lao, they snatched a bag from the hands of a foreign woman as she crossed the street.
The police officers immediately gave chase.
The suspects zipped through Nguyen Thai Hoc, Le Lai, Tran Hung Dao and Calmette streets before officers caught up with them.
As soon as they saw the officers approaching, they threw their helmets at them.
The officers fired warning shots in the air to alert the suspects, forcing the man on the back seat to jump off the bike and run into 23.9 Park, with the stolen bag still in hand.
An officer leapt off his bike and managed to run the suspect down in the park.
A team of other officers chased after the driver and stopped him on Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, but the criminal jumped off the bike and ran away.
He was later apprehended with the help of local residents.
The suspect fiercely resisted his arrest, screaming and yelling at the cops. After being taken to a police station, he was identified as Le Hoang, 27, a convicted murderer.
Police said the other suspect is Truong Thai Ngoc, 23, who once served time for robbery.
