Authorities at Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat International Airport announced Thursday they had arrested a ground services officer for stealing money from a passenger's suitcase, Sai Gon Tiep Thi newspaper reported.

Dao Van Cuong of Tan Son Nhat International Airport Ground Handling Services (TIAGS) was caught stealing US$2,400 in cash from the luggage of a passenger who was about to aboard a Vietnam Airlines plane bound for South Korea Tuesday .

The passenger remembered leaving the money in the suitcase shortly after check-in, and asked airport authorities to get the cash back.

The cash was then not found in the suitcase. Authorities questioned Cuong, who was in charge of handling luggage, and he confessed to stealing.

Cuong said he found the cash in the unlocked suitcase and hid it in a fire alarm box on the wall.

The money was given back to the passenger while Cuong was handed over to local police.

A TIAGS representative said Cuong had been suspended from his post.
