Hanoi will stop licensing taxis beginning in 2012 to reduce traffic congestion in the capital, the Hanoi Department of Transport said in a Wednesday meeting, Lao Dong newspaper reported.

Nguyen Quoc Hung, the department's director, said there are currently around 16,000 licensed taxis in the city.

An estimated 1,000 to 2,000 illegal taxis are also under operation, according to the department.

As part of the department's plan to reduce traffic congestion, taxi companies operating in certain areas of the city are required to contribute part of their revenue to traffic infrastructure building projects.
