The mayor of Hanoi on Wednesday asked the management board of the Nhon-Hanoi railway project to speed up work and complete it by  2016, newswire VnExpress reported.

The municipal People's Committee chairman Nguyen The Thao said weak management and limited technical capacity had slowed down progress on Hanoi's first urban railway project.

Pham Tuan Son, director of the management board, said the project needed additional funding because of several technical changes.

Work began last September on the pilot urban railway route running from Nhon in Tu Liem District to the Hanoi Railway Station.

The 12-kilometer long rail route will connect the city's western part with its southern part as well as its downtown area.

The project's estimated cost of 780 million euros (US$1.14 billion) is sourced from French ODA and the Asian Development Bank.
