Two people, including a police officer, were killed and three others injured when a hand granade exploded at a police station in Hanoi Saturday morning.
Eyewitnesses said they heard the explosion in the front yard of the station in O Cho Dua Ward, Dong Da District at around 9 a.m. and there was a lot of black smoke and the burning smell of dynamite.
A motorbike was smashed and debris from the explosion was everywhere on the walls of the building.
Initial investigations show that the accident occurred when the police were bringing in illegal explosives seized from residents including two grenades, shotguns and 90 bullets, according to local media.
Some nearby residents said they felt their houses as though there was an earthquake.
The dead policeman has been identified as 37-year-old Nguyen Van Ut. The other man killed in the explosion was 68-year-old Vu Dinh So. The injured have been hospitalized.
Hanoi police have cordones off the site for further investigation.
