Police in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi are seeking to press charges against a man for allegedly killing a four-year-old girl and raping her eight-year-old sister in July.
Dang Tran Hoai, 26, would face charges of "child murder," "child rape," and "robbery," news website VnExpress reported Friday.
The police said that on July 29, while on his way back drunk from a wedding party in Tu Liem District, Hoai entered the house of Khuat Van Hien in Son Tay District to steal a shirt after his was dirtied when he fell off his motorbike.
He saw Hien's daughters watching TV.
After finding out from the girls that Hien was out for work and his wife was at the market, Hoai grabbed a knife from the kitchen and allegedly raped the older girl at knife point.
When the younger one cried out, he slashed at her until she collapsed, the police said. The girl later died on her way to hospital.
According to the police, Hoai continued to rape the elder girl after that until he was caught in the act by Khuat Xuan Phuong, Hien's brother.
Phuong, who lives nearby, went to the house upon hearing the girls' cries.
Hoai slashed Phuong in the left ear before bolting out of the house with a T-shirt covering his genitals.
He hid himself in a garden nearby where he got rid of the knife.
He tried to stop a woman to steal her motorbike, but did not succeed.
He stopped a car passing by and was trying to get into it when hundreds of locals who had gathered caught him and handed him over to the police.
VnExpress quoted a lawyer as saying Hoai faces death if convicted.
