Police in Hanoi have arrested a high-ranking government official who was accused of various land use violations at a company he ran before starting his political career last year.
A source from the Ministry of Public Security said Friday that police had been informed of Phan Minh Nguyet’s violations between 2012 and 2013, when he was chairman and general director of the state-owned agriculture company Hadico.
The 53-year-old is serving as deputy director of Hanoi’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, a position he was appointed to in January 2014.
While details of the allegations have not been revealed, police said the land use violations involved various agriculture projects developed by Hadico, including a large-scale poultry slaughter house and several trade and promotion centers.
Chu Phu My, the department's director, told news website VnExpress that Nguyet was arrested for his prior wrongdoings.
"It has nothing to do with the agriculture department," My said.
Police also detained Hadico’s chief accountant Nguyen Thi Huyen Hao.
They said they are investigating both for abuse of power.
