Police in Hanoi have arrested a man who allegedly pretended having his foot run over by at least six different cars and forcing their owners to compensate him.
The arrest of Tran Anh Cuong, 33, a motorbike taxi driver, was made last Friday after police had received complaints from several drivers, local media reported.
They said Cuong had been doing the scam since at least last March. When stopping next to the cars at red lights, he would scream out that the cars ran over his foot and demand compensation of VND1 million (US$45.8) each time.
Cuong mostly scammed car drivers who drove into motorbike lanes. The drivers would give him some money instead of reporting him to the police.
One driver last March paid him VND400,000 and two others each gave him VND200,000 the month after.
A female driver felt so guilty she even bought him bandages.
There were two drivers who believed that he was just faking the crash and did not agree to pay.
Police said the victims can now call the hotline 0439 396 465 to claim their money back.
