The Hanoi city administration has announced new rules limiting government agencies' car purchase to two and the value of each vehicle to VND720 million (US$34,540).
In the next two years agencies directly under the Hanoi People's Committee can buy two new cars, and lower-level ones, just one.
They can only replace old ones that have reached expiry date or run more than 250,000 kilometers.
Heads of central, city, and provincial administrations are provided with official cars, as are heads of departments, district administrations, and Party and legislative officials down to the district level.
Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City account for more than 1,800 out of 25,000 official cars nationwide.
