A gambler drowned in a Hanoi's lake while trying to flee police on Sunday.

Initial information showed that the capital's police raided a gathering of 30 gamblers along the bank of Ba Mau Lake on Le Duan Street at 5 p.m.

Three of the gamblers jumped into the lake to escape capture; one of them drowned in the middle of the lake, which is some seven meters deep, witnesses said. The other two, meanwhile, swam back to the bank.

Vietnamnet said rescuers retrieved the gambler's body three hours later and identified him Vu Ngoc Tu, 32, a Hanoian.

Following an initial round of questioniong, police held 15 suspects in custody for further investigation, according to the news website.

Police said the gamblers have operated there for more than two weeks.

Most of gamblers are ex-cons from Hanoi, Hai Phong, Ha Nam and Ninh Binh.
