Hanoi police detained two men on Thursday for allegedly stealing money from people’s phone accounts.
Nguyen Anh Tuan, 23, and Do Van Dung, 20, allegedly created several Facebook accounts to share fake information on telecom promotions, citing close insiders from leading telecom firms.
They usually told their potential victims that an uncle at Viettel or an aunt at MobiFone had let them in on an exclusive promotion offered only to company insiders.
Victims were told to buy an account card and text a series of digits including the card code to certain numbers to win 10 or 20 times the card’s value.
Instead of getting big bonuses, the duo sapped their customer's accounts of funds
Dung and Tuan also made the promotions more convincing by creating fake Facebook testimonials from allegedly satisfied customers.
They also posted fake images of phone screens.
Vietnam’s top cyber security company Bkav said the scam was one of the three biggest perpetrated on Facebook last year.
Tuan cheated his customers out of at least VND8 million (US$376) while Dung VND30 million ($1,408), according to police.
