Vietnamese police have fined a married couple VND20 million (US$944) for spreading rumors that an Ebola-infected patient was being treated in Hanoi.
Vuong Ba Huy, 31, and his wife Do Thuy Linh, 29, were found posting the incorrect information on their personal Facebook pages and other Facebook public forums on August 11 and 12.
They claimed the non-existent patient had been admitted to Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi. Their posts were then shared by other Facebook users.
The couple told police they made up the information in order to warn people of the danger of Ebola virus.
Hanoi police also summoned two other women named Nghiem Thuy Trang, 30, and Vu Huong Thao, 23, for questioning after they found the women spreading the rumors on Facebook on August 11, but the fines for the pair have not been determined yet.
