A police officer in Hanoi was arrested Wednesday for alleged involvement in the death of a man while the latter was in police custody.
Nguyen Van Ninh, 53, a former lieutenant-colonel of Thinh Liet Ward's police division, is being investigated on charges of "deliberately injuring others."
It appears that on Monday, February 28, Ninh and three members of the ward's security team argued with Trinh Xuan Tung, 53, over the latter's failure to wear a helmet at the Giap Bat Bus Station.
They took Tung to the local police station and later the same day, he was brought to the Bach Mai Hospital with injuries in his spinal column and marrow. Tung died Tuesday after an operation.
Tung's family has said that he did not commit any traffic violation because he'd stopped at the station and taken his helmet off to answer a phone call, the Saigon Tiep Thi newspaper reported.
The case is being investigated further, police said.
