Vietnam is developing a plan to build an international airport in the northern city of Hai Phong to support Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airport, which is likely to be thoroughly congested in the coming years.
Under a previous plan, the Cat Bi Airport in the city was to be upgraded to serve larger aircraft and help meet the growing demand for air travel in the North East region, the government said in a report on its website Wednesday.
However, the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam pointed out that such a plan was not viable as Cat Bi is located too close to a military airport and in the middle of a densely populated area.
As a result the Ministry of Transport has been asked to develop a plan to build a brand new international airport in Tien Lang District. The ministry said the district has great traffic and weather conditions to accommodate a large airport.
Hai Phong is around 100 kilometers from Hanoi.
