Police in the northern province of Hai Duong Saturday arrested one of the four thieves who broke into an ATM booth and took away VND1.3 billion (US$62,200) a week earlier.
Tran Duc Khanh, 24, and three other men who ar still at large drove two motorbikes to the office of the Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Agribank) in Ninh Giang District at around 2 a.m. on October 7.
They smashed the glass door of the security officers' booth, slashed at the hands of Vu Ngoc Chung, a 42-year-old security guard, and tied him up.
Then they used a butane torch to cut open the money box of the ATM and took VND1.3 billion in cash.
Before they left, they also took Chung's mobile phone and VND2.6 million in cash from his wallet.
Police are continuing the search for Khanh's accomplices.
