Military officials in central Vietnam said a grenade-shaped object found in an air parcel bound for Hanoi Tuesday was actually a toy made in China.
Le Hong Son, chief military commander of Thua Thien-Hue Province, said his unit spent hours examining the object, which at 134 grams was much lighter than a real grenade.
“It’s just a toy in the shape of a grenade,” Son was quoted as saying by news website VnExpress.
The local post office sent the parcel to Phu Bai Airport near Hue Tuesday morning and booked it on a flight to Hanoi the same day.
Post office officials said a man in neighboring Quang Tri Province sent the toy after ordering it online from Hanoi and wanting to return it.
“We are just a middle agent and do not have the authority to check any parcel,” Duong Van Ha, the post office director, said to explain why his staff had not spotted the object in the first place.
