A government official who kicked a caddy unconscious is being investigated but the case is "not serious," according to police in the northern province of Vinh Phuc.
Tran Hai Le, 28, an officer with the National Assembly Office's Foreign Affairs Department, allegedly attacked Pham Thi Tuyet, 25, at the Dai Lai Star Golf & Country Club in Vinh Phuc's Phuc Yen Town on August 12.
A Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper report says Le, a regular customer of the golf course, and a man named Van went to play at the 18-hole golf course and Tuyet was assigned to serve them.
The report said Le suddenly kicked Tuyet's right thigh hard for no apparent reason, causing her to collapse and pass out.
Meanwhile, news website VnExpress reported that when Le faced the 16th hole, Tuyet saw that some people were not out of the safety zone (200 meters), so she told Le not to take a shot.
However, Le went ahead and played a shot, which failed.
At that point, the VnExpress report said, Le went berserk. He rushed to Tuyet and kicked her in the thigh. Tuyet passed out.
Other caddies rushed her to the hospital. Le was nabbed by the golf course's security guards.
As of August 14, Tuyet was still being treated at the Phuc Yen General Hospital with a bruised thigh and unable to walk.
The management board of the Dai Lai golf course said Le was taken to a police station for questioning after the incident. Later that day (August 12), he was bailed out by his family.
Police said they are still collecting testimony from eyewitnesses and others concerned. A local police official said the case was not "serious" and if the two sides agreed to settle via conciliation, they would consider fining Le rather than pressing criminal charges against him.
Senior officials of the National Assembly Office told Tuoi Tre they would ask Le to report on the incident and award "proper punishments" later.
