Police in the central province of Quang Nam are searching for the bodies of three gold miners who were buried when the illegal mine collapsed Friday night.
The Phuoc Son District mine caved in at around 9 p.m. Friday, but the panicked survivors fled to hide in the mountains and authorities were not informed until the next day.
An officer said the mine is located deep in the jungle and it took them more than ten hours to get there, as a lack of roads forced them to travel by foot.
It was impossible to bring large machines, while the bodies remain buried under tens of thousands of cubic meters of soil and rock.
Police are investigating the cause of the collapse and identifying the dead.
Deadly accidents are not uncommon at illegal or private mines in Vietnam, where labor and safety regulations are often disregarded.
